Ideas
for Recognizing Oncology Certified Nurses
Support and recognition of certified nurses provides employers
with opportunities to motivate their staff. People have a need
for rewards to validate their accomplishments. Whether these
needs are for intrinsic or extrinsic rewards, of a financial
or nonfinancial nature, supporting and recognizing certification
can enhance employee satisfaction and performance.
How can you encourage, support, and recognize oncology certification
of your nursing staff? Consider these ideas for recognizing
certified nurses.
- Distribute certification bulletins and personal encouragement.
Give your nurses certification bulletins and personally encourage
them to pursue certification. Encouragement from a supervisor
or coworker can be a great motivator to pursue certification.
- Provide financial assistance for nurses to pursue
certification. Reimburse for test fees and expenses,
provide paid time off to take the test, pay for a review course,
or provide a library of study materials.
- Reward certified nurses. Give certified nurses
a monetary bonus for attaining or renewing their oncology
credential. Provide pay differentials for certified nurses.
- Offer personal recognition. Present certified
nurses with an OCN®, AOCN®,
or CPON® pin. Sender a letter of congratulations
from the CEO or other administrator. Add certified nurses'
credentials to their name badges and business cards.
- Recognize certified nurses publicly. Display
certified nurses' certificates on the unit. Publish an announcement
in your facility newsletter. Send press releases to local
newspapers. Host a special event for certified nurses during
Nurse's Week. Display the names of certified nurses on a plaque
in the unit.
- Offer shift/day work schedule preferences to certified
nurses.
- Nominate a certified nurse for ONCC's OCN®,
AOCN®, or CPON® of the Year
Award.
