PITTSBURGH, PA – April 29, 2014 – The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) has chosen Deborah Boyle RN, MSN, AOCNS®, FAAN as the 2014 Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year. Boyle was selected for the award based on her contributions to oncology nursing and oncology nursing service, and her support and promotion of oncology nursing certification.
Boyle is a Clinical Nurse Specialist for UC Irvine Health and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is a nationally and internationally known lecturer and author, promoting oncology nursing practice and recognition. Her colleagues describe her as an “enthusiastic and competent practitioner who uses creative approaches to enhance patient care.” Boyle has been certified by ONCC for 25 years and actively encourages certification among her colleagues. She developed two OCN® review courses at UC Irvine to assist nurses with test preparation. When she began her current position in 2011, only two staff members were certified. Now, ten nurses hold certification from ONCC, with fourteen additional nurses currently pursuing oncology certification.
Throughout her career, Boyle has served in various volunteer leadership positions with the Oncology Nursing Society, is an active member of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, and has been inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She was invited to serve as an Oncology Visiting Nurse Professor in Australia, Singapore, and Ireland.
According to Boyle, "Being recognized by one’s peers is the highest of all accolades. I am humbled to receive this honor and do so in acknowledgment of the tremendous contributions made within cancer care by all oncology advanced practice nurses."
The award will be presented during the ONCC Recognition Breakfast at the ONS Annual Congress on May 2, 2014 in Anaheim, CA.
