PITTSBURGH, PA – June 6, 2016 – Laura Vogeli, RN, BSN, OCN®, CBCN®, has been an oncology nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital for almost 30 years. She became a CBCN® in 2009 – the first year the certification was available. Over the past six years, Vogeli has co-instructed CBCN® and OCN® review courses, and she was also was an ONS-certified instructor for the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy Provider course.
Committed to a productive and healthy work environment, Vogeli worked with staff at the Breast Center and Cancer Center to develop the “Fast 5 Program.” The program helps to expedite appointments for patients with a BIRAD-5 abnormality on a mammogram in order for a biopsy, analysis, and consultation appointment to be completed in just five business days.
In addition, Vogeli co-facilitated a program called “Vital Hearts,” which taught staff self-care skills to help them manage emotional trauma as a result of caring for cancer patients.
Vogeli devotes her volunteer time to her patients, by helping with the National Cancer Survivor’s Day celebration and the annual “Walk for Beauty,” which raises funds for breast cancer research.
The award was presented during the ONCC Recognition Breakfast at the Oncology Nursing Society’s (ONS) 41st Annual Congress on April 29, 2016, in San Antonio.
The Certified Breast Care Nurse of the Year Award is presented annually to an outstanding CBCN®-certified nurse.
