ACON™ Frequently Asked Questions

ACON FAQs

The ACON™ program is still in the early stages of development. When the examination is ready, it will first be offered as a beta test. The purpose of the beta test is to ensure the exam fairly and accurately tests the knowledge it is intended to measure, and to set the passing score for the exam. Following the beta test, the exam will be launched for regular administration. The ACON™ beta test is tentatively expected in late 2026.

The Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP®) examination validates the specialized knowledge needed to perform the oncology nurse practitioner role in adult oncology. The ACON™ examination is for RNs in pediatric and adult oncology who have a master’s or higher degree in nursing (e.g., DNP, PhD).

Yes, but the body of knowledge will not be directly and fully aligned to the practice of an oncology nurse practitioner.

The AOCN® certification no longer has an exam or current role delineation study associated with the credential. Therefore, it is available only for renewal. The ACON™ was created based on current competency model and test content outline development projects and reflects current oncology nursing practice at an advanced level.

No. The ACON™ program is a new certification, not a renaming of the AOCN® program. AOCN® certified nurses may continue to use the AOCN® credential as long as they continue to renew it. Nurses who wish to become ACON™ certified must pass the ACON™ examination to earn the credential.

No. The exam is open to nurses who meet the eligibility criteria. Read the eligibility criteria on the ONCC website.

Yes. A beta test period will be conducted before the ACON™ exam is fully launched. The purpose of the beta test is to ensure the exam fairly and accurately tests the knowledge it is intended to measure, and to set the passing score for the exam. The beta examination may have a limit on the number of registrants.

Yes. ONCC will offer practice tests closer to the release of the examination.

ONCC does not provide study materials but will provide an ACON™ Test Content Outline of the major subject areas on the exam and a list of references used to support the questions found on the exam. ONCC suggests test candidates review the ACON™ Test Content Outline to determine the areas they know well, and the areas where additional study may be needed. Test candidates should choose study resources from the reference list based on their learning needs.

The ACON™ program is being developed according to national accreditation standards. ONCC will apply for accreditation as soon as the program is eligible.

Once the ACON™ program becomes accredited it should be recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®.
