BMTCN® to TCTCN™ Name Change FAQ

General

The name change more accurately reflects the evolving practice for transplant and cellular therapy, as supported by the results of the 2024 BMTCN® Role Delineation Study. Based on the study results, a recommendation was made to the ONCC Board of Directors to change the name of the BMTCN® program, and the name TCTCN™ was approved.

Tests, Assessments, Learning Plans, and Renewal

TCTCN™ examinations will be offered beginning in January 2026. 

The TCTCN™ test content outline is in many ways the update to the BMTCN® test content outline that would happen every four years. There are more questions about cellular therapy because of the evolution of the role.

No. You may continue to use the ATA issued to you to log in to your assessment. Beginning January 1, 2026, the assessment will be the TCTCN™ assessment.

No. At this time, your learning plan will not change. 

BMTCNs who are due to renew in 2025 will renew their current certification. The name of the certification will change to TCTCN™ in January 2026 and will be renewed in subsequent years as TCTCN™. 

Yes. ONCC will offer two practice tests for TCTCN™, one free and one for a fee. 

No. The eligibility criteria for months and hours of practice are the same for TCTCN™ as for BMTCN®. The wording has been updated to indicate the practice hours and required CE must be in the specialty of transplantation or cellular therapy. 

Using/Displaying the TCTCN™ Credential

January 1, 2026

No. Once the name change becomes effective in January 2026, all BTMCN® certified nurses should use the TCTCN™ credential. BMTCN® is a registered trademark of the ONCC and should not be used after the change to TCTCN™.

Yes. A new certificate will be sent to you in the first quarter of 2026.

Please use the trademark (™) symbol until trademark registration is approved. ONCC will notify you when the registered trademark has been approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

A new TCTCN™ digital badge will be issued to all credential holders in 2026. Once you are notified of the new TCTCN™ badge, you should download the new badge and stop using the BMTCN® digital badge. 

Nurses who are BMTCN®-Emeritus should continue to use BMTCN®-Emeritus. Beginning in 2026, ONCC will begin granting TCTCN™-Emeritus.

ONCC provides an online order form you can use to request an updated replacement certificate for your plaque. ONCC will begin issuing certificates with the TCTCN™ credential in 2026, including fulfillment of requests for replacement certificates.  

ONCC’s online Verification System will be updated in early 2026 to show BMTCN® credential holders as TCTCN™.

Yes. A TCTCN™ pin will be available for purchase in the ONCC store sometime in 2026. 

Accreditation and Recognition by Other Organizations

Yes. Although the name of the BMTCN® program is changing to TCTCN™, the program will continue to be accredited by the NCCA after the name changes to TCTCN™.

The TCTCN™ will be on the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) list of accredited programs, which is used by the Magnet Recognition Program®. The Magnet Program should recognize TCTCN™ as it has BMTCN®. ONCC will communicate the program name change to the Magnet Recognition Program officials. The Magnet Recognition Program will determine when to update their program information.

The TCTCN™ will be on the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) list of accredited programs. The Commission on Cancer (CoC) should recognize TCTCN™ as it has BMTCN®. ONCC will communicate the program name change to the CoC officials. The CoC will determine when to update their program information and materials.

Review Courses

When the name of the BMTCN® credential changes to TCTCN™, the title of the review course should be changed to TCTCN™.
